Consisting of members Yung Dezzy-D and Lil Bill Swavey, ThatNation are a Hip Hop duo that hail from the tiny town of Opelousas, Louisiana. Always representing their true selves to the fullest, ThatNation are out to show and prove that one doesn’t have to be from a big city in order to possess stellar talent…
Let’s hop right into your latest single, “My Whole Life” — Tell me about this particular composition? How did it even come to fruition?
The song basically came about when I heard the beat, and I just thought about the beginning of the song “Differences,” by Ginuwine, and turned the hook into a trap song about my life. The verse came from my head; natural and real.
How did the two of you initially come together to form the group?
We’d taken a world history class our freshman year in high school. Bill was the rapper everybody knew of at the time, so we talked about music one day and started recording together. We won talent shows together after we made the theme song for our high school basketball team. We both started dropping freestyles on YouTube, and became very known on Twitter and just kept working together.
That being said, how then would you all describe and/or define the style of music that you all create and perform?
Hmm…I’ll say, we make reality music. We rap about what’s real at times, we make songs about the struggle. We tell stories, and most of all we have bars, punchlines, double entendres and metaphors. That’s a lane we take it to the most.
Where does your moniker, ThatNation, originally derive from?
It’s based off of our original group name, “YungnNation.” We started that back in 2011. Had everybody reppin’ it. We became pretty popular, so we started saying, “We’re ThatNation,” and that just stuck with us. American flags and everything red, white and blue, basically being nationwide.
What do you all feel you offer the music industry that we don’t already have in other performers?
Well the industry is full of singing and mumble rappers. Basically rappers not saying more than 8 words in their hooks. Not to diss anyone, but we’re bringing back real music that can touch you. From reality music, to music that gives you the chills. We bring that “wanting to be the best” attitude back to the game.
What do you all want people to get from your music?
Honestly, people are going to perceive what they hear. We just want them to enjoy it. Never can force someone to be a fan or listen to your music, because if you force it on them they’re not really being a listener. So basically people that tune into our music wanting to enjoy it, will enjoy it and that’s a promise. We just wanna be able to touch and help people with real life situations showing we’re just like them.
Do you all have any other outside/additional aspirations, maybe even completely away from entertainment?
I’ve been wanting to rap all my life, that’s all I know and all I ever will know. I just want to be a great all around musician. Other than that, I want to get into making games maybe.
If you all could collaborate with any one artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Uhh, man, that’s an hard one. I’d honestly pick 4 not in any order, David Ruffin, Whitney Houston, Lil Wayne and Michael Jackson. Those names speak for themselves.
One track of yours that you think defines you all and why?
A song from our collab mix-tape, “Maybe It’s Just Me,” because people are so sleep on our music, too, it’s a shame; they say we’re amazing, but still tend to show us no love. They rather support a rapper that’s on already, and that’s no problem with me…I respect it, but don’t smile in my face if you don’t respect my grind.
Lastly, what’s next for you all?
The sky is the limit! God has been blessing us. It’s an enormous amount of situations we will be placing our hands around, so please tune in because we’re not stopping. We gonna be everywhere.
Any “closing” thought(s) for our readers?
We’re two 22 year olds from Opelousas, Louisiana…God placed us here to do what we do. Thank you for rockin’ with us, and kids if you’re listening stay in school. You really can be what you want to be. We turned nothing into something.
