NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock has emerged as a candidate to become the Washington Redskins' next general manager, according to league sources.

The Redskins are not rushing to fill the opening that was created Thursday when they fired Scot McCloughan. Washington easily could wind up waiting until after next month's NFL draft, per sources. The team has a group of candidates that is thought to also include ESPN analyst Mark Dominik, per league sources.

Mayock released a statement through the NFL Network on Friday.

"Regarding Adam Schefter's report about the Redskins GM position: There has been no official contact between myself and the team and no interviews about the job," Mayock said. "My focus and energy — as it typically is this time of year — is squarely focused on the NFL Draft and NFL Network's coverage of that event … this year in my hometown of Philly!"

Mayock has been considered for other front-office NFL jobs at various points but has declined to make the jump from television to a team.

CBS Sports identified Dominik as a potential GM candidate on Wednesday. Dominik, the Buccaneers' GM from 2009 to 2013, has been at ESPN since 2014. He has been mentioned as a possible candidate for several front-office positions over the past few years, including with the 49ers this offseason.

Hall of Famer Al Davis, late owner of the Oakland Raiders, once hired and helped teach current Redskins president Bruce Allen. Davis thought highly of Mayock, and the Washington organization does as well. Mayock also has a good relationship with Redskins head coach Jay Gruden.

The Redskins' interest in Mayock is the latest case of teams identifying television analysts as candidates for front-office positions. The 49ers hired John Lynch of Fox Sports as their GM in January and also interviewed ESPN's Louis Riddick for the position.
